78 year old Bonita Springs resident Sheila Pedisich decided to celebrate her birthday in memorable fashion, so she jumped out of an airplane flying 10,000 feet high. A few minutes later, Pedisich landed safely on the ground, thanks to the help of her instructor.
Sheila and other residents of The Terraces at Bonita Springs parachuted on October 27th to raise money for Alzheimer’s research. So far, the group has raised $2,000 and increased public awareness for the disease. As a provider of senior care in Naples, we couldn’t be happier that Shila and her friends are tacking the situation with such vibrancy!
Pedisich’s husband, Antone, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2009. In 2013, the couple moved into The Terraces after the disease became too difficult for Sheila alone to handle. Now, her husband receives professional care at their residence within the retirement community.
For people with mild Alzheimer’s, spouses and partners are heavily relied on for support. If a person with Alzheimer’s lives alone in a senior facility, staff can assist with scheduling, transportation, and basic needs.
However, as the disease worsens, those with Alzheimer’s and their families often turn to professional services such as home care. Home health aides can make daily visits to ensure that basic daily needs like eating, bathing, and taking medication are performed properly. This type of professional part-time care in Naples can go a long way in ensuring safety for seniors with Alzheimer’s, while also promoting independence.
People with severe stages of Alzheimer’s usually require 24 hour assistance to prevent wandering and maximize safety and comfort. Also referred to live-in care in Naples, caregivers can assist with a wide range of household tasks and personal care, while also providing companionship and support through each stage of the disease. Family members like Sheila are grateful for this level of professional service, as it alleviates them of the responsibility of providing such a constant, high level of care for their loved one.
